The HTA room attendant apprenticeship program is designed for the inexperienced, or even experienced room attendant/housekeeper without formal training. the course is divided into three (3) learning units: The first provides an overview of the hospitality industry and guest room services, the second teaches the skills and duties of room attendants, and the third covers customer service and hospitality. This course is a front-loaded, 153-hours of related hands-on class instruction and testing. For homework, the students must complete and pass the online american hotel and lodging education institute (AHLEI) skills, tasks and results training (start) program. The apprenticeship is a competency-based program, where the student must work in a union hotel for a minimum of 1,000 hours and successfully pass all of his/her competencies. The program prepares individuals to successfully enter the hospitality industry with a knowledge of terminology and acronyms used in the industry, profession conduct and personal grooming, organization and time management, how to clean a room, how to avoid injury by learning safety and ergonomic techniques, how to identify victims of slavery and trafficking, and how to deal with difficult customers. At the end of the program, the student will receive three (3) certifications: The US Department of Labor registered apprenticeship certification, the HTA room attendant apprenticeship/housekeeping certification, and the AHLEI start program certification.
